Outline for the Third Term Paper

Introduction

Visual effects of explosions are really amazing to watch. They seem so real when everything explodes. For this paper I will be comparing explosion effects in movies, "Transformers: Age of Extinction," and "Fast and Furious 6."

Transformers: Age of Extinction

-Some explosions were real
-Some explosions are computer generated
-Real fire
-Real disasters
-Some disasters are computer generated

Fast and Furious 6

-Explosions are real
-Fire is real
-Tank is real and actually crashes things
-Cars were destroyed for effects

Conclusion

Both of the movies have effects that are real and some are generated by computer. Both of the movies are early movies which use newer technology to create special effects. However, some effects are naturally done to make the movie more realistic and exciting.

Stop-Motion Character Animation

"Lamp Playing With Rope"

For this Stop-Motion Character Animation assignment I was not sure what to do. I came up with the idea of simply using a lamp as my character. I made the lamp move and I placed some rope on the table. My plot was that the lamp was going to grab the rope and move it. I thought it was fun to watch the lamp move the rope. At the beginning of the video I showed my arm grabbing some papers from the table. I did this in order to create the story of the lamp coming to life after I leave. It was fun to make this video.

Science Fact or Cinematic Fiction

Cinematic fiction has become more popular since the laws of physics were first broken. Fiction has become a way in which the unreal can become something we all love. There is no other thing more fascinating than to watch something unreal because it makes us dream of what we wished we could do in the real world. The laws of motion have been broken in many films in order to produce something exciting to watch. The first law of motion states that on object at rest will remain at rest unless acted by an unbalanced force. The second law of motion states that acceleration is produced when a force acts on mass. The third law of motion states that for every action there is an equal and opposite re-action. In the movies, Shaolin Soccer, The Avengers, and Fast and the Furious 6 break the laws of motion.

The movie, Shaolin Soccer, directed by Stephen Chow, is a film about a group of Shaolin kung fu people who join together to play soccer. The main soccer player, mighty steel leg Sing, has a leg of steel that has extremely high power. At the beginning of the film, Sing fights with some thugs and he uses his might steel leg to shoot fast balls at the thugs. In this scene, the laws of motion are broken. When Sing starts to shoot extremely powerful shots he is not affected by any of the actions. With such power he should be receiving the same amount of force on him and probably hurting him. However, the ones who get affected by the action are the thugs. They are receiving the action, but with less force. In other words, the film is not being realistic because with a powerful shot like that the thugs should get killed when getting hit by the balls. Of course it is all fictional since no one can actually shoot that powerful. We can see how the shots are powerful because when the ball hits the wall it breaks the wall. Therefore, the laws of motion are broken in the sense that no reaction is given to Sing and little reaction affects the thugs. Team Evil is a group of players that have been experimented with crazy steroids. They have stronger powers than the Shaolin players. In the last scene of the film, the main player from team Evil shoots the most powerful shot that even the ball turns into fire. The goalie, Mui, stops the ball by simply controlling it with the wind. This breaks the laws of motion because with a powerful shot like that she should have been affected by it. Instead, she stops the ball without getting hurt. In the real life, something powerful like that would not be stopped by the goalie. The goalie would have probably get some serious injury after that. Of course, Mui’s power is to control wind so therefore she was able to stop the fire ball. Without the laws of motion being broken the film would not be a success because the powers that the players have is what makes the whole movie interesting to watch.

In another film, The Avengers, directed by Joss Whedon, is a film about Marvel’s greatest heroes. In this film, the laws of motion are broken in many ways. We all know that Marvel movies are all fiction and they break the laws of physics in order to bring all the action into the movies. One of the scenes that breaks the laws of motion is when Iron Man and Thor have a battle in a park. We know that Iron Man is simply a guy in a metal suit, but Thor is a God. Knowing this we would think that Thor would kill Iron Man like nothing, but in fact Iron Man does not get affected a lot. In the scene, Iron Man tells Thor to stay out of the way and when he turns around Thor throws him his hammer. This is where the law of motion is broken because Iron Man gets hit by Thor’s hammer and he goes out flying, but is not really harmed by it. If this were to be real, Tony Stark would have gotten injured because of the impact the armor had by the hammer. The third law of motion states that for every action there is an equal and opposite re-action. If this was right when the armor got hit the force that the armor receives should have given the same amount of force to Tony Stark. Just because Tony Stark is wearing an armor does not mean that he shouldn’t get affected by the force acted on the armor by the hammer. Also, since Thor is a God his hammer should be extremely powerful that it should break Tony’s armor. Another example from this film has to do with Hulk. Hulk is known for smashing things. When he smashes things he has no reaction to them. Hulk is very strong, but he should be receiving an equal amount of force when he smashes things. In the scene where Dr. Banner turns into the Hulk and punches the big monster, he stops it without receiving an equal amount of force on him. Hulk receives a little reaction caused by the force of his punch. In the scene, instead of just getting pushed back at a slow motion, Hulk should have received a greater amount of force back. This would have cause him to probably have gotten pushed away very fast. Of course, we are talking about Hulk and therefore the film had to break this law in order to show that Hulk is extremely powerful and nothing can stop him.

Shaolin Soccer and The Avengers are two movies that are no doubt fictional. They break the laws of physics in order for the movie to make sense. However, in the movie, Fast and the Furious 6, directed by Justin Lin, is a film where real cars are the main focus. This film tries to be as realistic as possible, but the stunts that are made in the film break the laws of motion. In one of the scenes where Letty and the DSS agent get into combat with each other the law of motion is completely broken. In this scene, the two women fight and they hit each other with crazy hits. When they hit each other there are no reactions against each other. When punching each other on the face there should have been an opposite and equal reaction acted on each other. Instead, they fight like the hits don’t hurt. It’s funny to see how the DSS agent slams Letty on the wall, but Letty doesn’t get hurt. In the real world, a fight like this would cause many injuries on both persons because equal forces would be acted against each other. Another scene that breaks the laws of motion is the greatest scene from the entire film. In the last scene, Toretto and his crew are chasing the bad guy, Owen. Owen is inside a tank with Letty and are destroying everything on their way. Toretto finds a way to stop the tank. Brian pushes a car that is attached to the tank in order to use it as an anchor. Letty tries to remove the anchor so she goes outside the tank. Toretto worries about her and he knows he has to save her. The tank crashes and Letty is sent out flying to the air. Toretto gets ready to crash his car and when he does he jumps out in order to catch  Letty and safely land on a car’s windshield. When Toretto jumps and grabs Letty the force on him is passed to Letty and the force on Letty is passed on Toretto. These forces should have given each other an equal amount of force, which means that Toretto should have been extremely hurt when he landed on the windshield of the car. In the real world, Toretto would not have been able to catch Letty nor land safely.

In the examples from the movies, Saholin Soccer, The Avengers, and Fast and the Furious 6, we can see how movies portray the laws of motion incorrectly. Most of the times the movies intentionally break these laws in order to bring a sense to the movies. Otherwise, the movies would not be exciting to watch. However, when movies break the laws and exaggerate they make the movies lose a sense of reality. Viewers know when movies need to break these laws, but when they break the laws when it is not required they make an uninteresting and unbelievable film.

Reverse Video Reference

Doing these videos was a little bit challenging. It was hard trying to reproduce the same exact movements of the characters and their expressions. It was funny doing this assignment, but interesting.

Stop Motion Animation of Falling

For this stop-motion animation video the first thing I did was think about what I wanted to animate. At first, I was completely blanked out with no ideas. Then, I thought this idea of showing Sharky jumping and diving into the water. In order to do this I put three large white sheets of paper as a background. I used a blue towel to create the water. I used some sticks I found in the backyard to make some birds and a black sock as the cliff. Soon, I was ready for my stop-motion animation. I tried doing the video in Photoshop, but for some reason it did not let me. Therefore, I used iMovie create my video. After all, I had fun doing this!

The Laws of Physics in an Animation Universe

The laws of physics can be seen in everyday life. Space Jam, for example, is an animated, live action film created by Ivan Reitman and animated by Ron Tippe.  Space Jam combines real life and animation to catch people’s curiosity and engagement.  In the land of Looney Tunes, a group of tiny space creatures, called the Nerdlucks, land on Earth.  The Nerdlucks are sent by their boss, the Swackhammer, to kidnap Bugs Bunny and his friends.  The movie takes place on both Earth and planet Looney Tunes where some of the laws of physics are broken.

The Nerdlucks want to take Bugs Bunny and his friends to their planet.  In order for Bugs Bunny to stop the Nerdlucks, he challenges them into a basketball game.  If the Looney Tunes win, they can stay on Earth, but if the Nerdlucks win, they will have to go to Swackhammer.  Bugs Bunny believes that they would win knowing that the aliens are weak and little.  However, he soon finds out that the Nerdlucks have the ability to absorb new skills.  With these skills, the Nerdlucks absorb the talent from some of the NBA stars in the real world, such as Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, Muggsey Bogues, Larry Johnson, and Shawn Bradley.  This allows the Nerdlucks to become very powerful, fast, and big monsters.  Realizing what Bugs Bunny has to go against with, he searches for help.  He decides to search for Michael Jordan, the most talented basketball player.  The Looney Tunes end up catching Michael Jordan to take him to Looney Tunes land, where they explain to him what is the problem.  Jordan agrees to help them, but he realizes the Looney Tunes need to practice first.

One of the laws of physics is broken when the Nerdlucks go to Earth.  They smash through the ground where they head to Looney Tunes land.  In this example, it is clear that in the real world, smashing through the ground would not be possible. Gravity seems to have no effect on the Nerdlucks since they are able to smash the ground with great force. After smashing though the ground, it seems that there is a tunnel connecting Earth and Looney Tunes land.  This is unrealistic, and this is where both the real world and the animated world begin to combine.  Thinking back to when the Nerdlucks are challenged by Bugs Bunny to a basketball game, they go to the real world to absorb the abilities of five of the NBA stars.  The Nerdlucks go to the real world and they go inside the players bodies where they absorb the skills.  In this example, we can see that this is not possible since they are animated cartoons.  Another example where the laws of physics are broken is when the Nerdlucks transform into super monsters.  One of the monsters breaks the ground with the basketball.  This is impossible because no one can break the ground with a ball, the ball would end up bouncing off instead of breaking the ground, no matter the pressure.  When the Looney Tunes find Michael Jordan in the golf course, they capture him and they suck him in the golf hole, where they transport him into the Looney Tunes land.  In this example we see how stretch is used to animate Michael Jordan in order for him to fit in the hole and travel underground.  This is obviously breaking the law, because no human can stretch like a cartoon in the real world.  If this would follow the laws of physics, Michael Jordan would not be able to fit through a golf hole.

In the next example we see how animation is not affected by gravity.  When Jordan meets the Looney Tunes, Daffy Duck sits Jordan on a chair and sends him flying up in the sky.  Jordan is then brought down at a high speed but gravity does not affect his free fall.  He lands safe with no damage.  Later on, Jordan meets the Nerdlucks and discovers who they are.  Jordan tells them that he has retired from basketball and the Nerdlucks make fun of him.  One of the Nerdluck monsters grabs him with his hands and smashes him turning him into a basketball.

It is clear that this is impossible and can only be done in an animated world.  After Jordan agrees to help the Looney Tunes, he sends Bugs Bunny and Duffy to his house to get his basketball gear.  In this example we can see how animation and the real world are combined, breaking the laws of physics.  Bugs and Duffy are walking underground and they enter Jordan’s house, making the ground move like waves without a trace of damage.  In real life, the ground would not be able to move like waves, like an animated scene.  After this, Duffy Duck gets attacked by Jordan’s dog and they fight like two cartoon characters.  The dog then knocks over a door and grabs Duffy and squeezes him without letting him go.  After grabbing Jordan’s gear, they go back to Luney Tunes land where they would start the basketball game.

When Jordan and his team begin to play the game, there are many paths of action that are created in an impossible way.  Throughout the game, everyone is jumping creating paths of action without having gravity pulling them down.  This allows them to jump from far away and scoring easily.  In the real world, this could not be done because gravity would pull the players down without letting them jump long enough.  Another example is when the Nerdlucks jump with great power and hang from the basketball rim without breaking it.  With that much weight and force the rims would be damage. We can see all kinds of arcs being produced throughout the game where everyone is jumping in a uniform and horizontal motion.

As the game continues, Jordan’s team is getting killed by the Nerdlucks in every way possible.  The Nerdlucks are smashing everyone causing them to get injured.  All of these animated effects would cause serious damage.  With no more players on Jordan’s team, Jordan is forced to put his assistant on his team.  When the assistant is put in the game, one of the Nerdlucks squishes him like a bug.

This law of physics is broken with exaggeration because a  human is being smashed like a cartoon and does not get physically harmed.  When the game is about to end, Jordan breaks the laws of physics and uses animation to stretch his arm from the half court line in order to score the winning point.  This is something exaggerated and impossible because only in an animated world can someone stretch their arm that long.

The movie Space Jam breaks all the laws of physics.  For this movie, the laws of physics had to be broken in order for the movie to make sense.  This movie is an animated/live action movie which requires laws to be purposely broken.  The movie is easily understood and the audience responds in a positive way because animation is meant to engage viewers in fictional manner.  By including the Looney Tunes, it allowed this movie to be a success, because everyone knows how the Looney Tunes, especially Bugs Bunny, are known for breaking the majority of the laws of physics.

Mini-Portfolio

Hello, I am a Graphic Design major.  I am currently in the BA Design Studies, but I am trying to go into the BFA Program. I grew up drawing and I enjoy anything that has to do with art. I have taken several art classes and design classes. This semester I am currently taking DSGD 100, Photo 112, and RTVF 110. My goals after I graduate is to hopefully work as a video game designer. I admired the art in video games and I enjoy playing them as well. This class will be my first animation class. I want to learn awesome things and apply them to my career.

This is a self-portrait of myself that I did in my design 83 class. I enjoyed doing this assignment because I need to get better in designing and drawing people.

My second image is my final project I did in my Art 74 class. I designed this by mashing up several images using Photoshop. I titled this image "Super-Robo-Batman." I was satisfied with the way it came out.

This is an animated film I found in Youtube. I thought it was a simple, but still a cool animated clip. It shows how life is simple and short. It was fun to watch and I thought it was a good way to start thinking about animated video clip ideas.
